What is Book Arts and why is it on your website?

Book Arts is exactly what it sounds like - the art of making books! I was able to really sink my teeth into this art form while I was studying at SCAD, and it quickly became a forever passion of mine. Studying each and every part of the book, from paper making to binding structures, letterpress and screen printing, and beyond to conceptual storytelling really stretched my concept of creativity and how to bring intentional decision making to every part of a project. So while I may no longer be sourcing organic fibers for my next batch of paper pulp or spending hours in a dark room developing my next screen for print, the skills I learned still translate to my day to day work.

Another Pass is a double accordion bound book that can be read in the round. It was constructed from handmade paper embedded with gas receipts and parking passes that I had saved for several years (originally because my dad told me to hang on to my receipts for gas, which I took to heart). The center paper was coated in a reflective, textured gesso in order to mimic reflective road lines.

Shift is an accordion bound book based on the idea of change and transition. Based on the dimensions and functions of a keyboard, (specifically the shifted numbers) the book explores the different definitions that can be applied to a symbol and how your perspective may change over time. The book was screenprinted on a white artist paper.
